Chronicles / Helldivers 2 War Room

Pivot: from chat bot to war room

Decision

The project began as a Discord bot that would answer questions with Claude. Reading the consumer terms closed that door on day one. It became a war room instead: live Helldivers 2 campaign status, Major Orders, and liberation rates, posted to a server.

The first idea was a bot that let a Discord server chat with Claude. A reading of the consumer terms made clear that this was not a use the subscription covered, and the project was renamed and re-aimed the same day.

The new aim

Helldivers 2 has a galactic war that changes hourly: planets under attack, liberation percentages, Major Orders with deadlines. The community API exposes all of it. A bot that watches the war and reports to a server is useful, has a clear scope, and needs no model at all.

The scaffold

The first pull request set the shape everything else kept:

  • Signature-verified interactions. Discord’s interaction webhook, verified on every request, with no gateway connection to maintain.
  • Two commands, /mo for the current Major Order and /feed to subscribe a channel.
  • A dispatch poller on a cron trigger that reads the war state and posts changes.
  • Cursor before post. The poller writes its position before posting, so a crash mid-post cannot double-post.
  • Tokens redacted from every log line.

Where it runs

Cloudflare Workers, chosen over Lambda for the free cron triggers and the KV store that came with it, and without a Discord framework, since interactions over HTTP need only a signature check and a JSON body.
