Drum accents

Design

Every drum hit can now be Soft, Normal, or Accent. In an Advanced song an Accents chip turns the drum grid into a level editor: tap a lit pad to cycle through the three, hold to clear it, drag to move it with its level intact. Accent pads get a corner mark and a bigger dot, Soft a smaller dot on a paler fill, and the desktop adds a Strength row under the selected lane. Levels are stored only on lit steps and dropped when every hit is Normal, so an old song saves byte for byte as before. The song format moved to version four to carry them.

The round-three mockups had offered a handful of structure extras, and the owner’s defaults kept exactly one: velocity, in three levels. It was briefed as slice 34, held until the Advanced mixer merged because the two shared the song’s core types, and dispatched the moment it did.

How it plays

A Soft hit sits about eight decibels under Normal and an Accent about four above, applied on the hit itself before the drum bus and the effects rack, so every kit honours it the same way. Pad previews and the background renderer carry the level too, and because the pattern already keys its rendered cells on its contents, a level change re-renders without any new plumbing.

How it is edited

In an Advanced song an Accents chip sits beside Copy from. With it on, a tap on a lit pad cycles Normal, Accent, Soft; a hold released in place, or Delete on a focused pad, turns the hit off; a drag still moves it, level and all. The chip remembers which song it was turned on in. On the desktop a Strength row under the selected lane sets levels by drag or arrow keys. All of it loads with the lazy pattern screen, so the first page load does not pay for it.

The review found the one real bug before it shipped: the Strength bars sat inside the lanes’ drop zone and looked like pads to the drag code, so a drop on a bar threw. The bars now carry their own marker, and tests drop and paint across the row with a real element under the pointer.

The format bump

Accents are the first field to use the song-version guard from the same day. The format is now four; a song saved at three opens and saves normally until it gains an accent, and a pattern with accents round-trips at four. The consequence the reviewer wrote down for the owner: every save by this build stamps the new format, so a device still on an older build sees that song as read-only until it updates.
